; The ongoing and increasing digitalization and mediatization of the lifeworld are leading to fundamental and inevitable change processes on a social and individual level. This raises the question of which tasks are coming up to educational processes. In terms of educational policy, there is agreement that schools (have to) play an important role in teaching media literacy. The concrete implementation is not meant to take place within one separate learning area but rather as part of all school subjects. This article discusses which problems and challenges arise for teaching media literacy in school between the poles of Media Pedagogy and Subject Didactics. If there is no subject or special learning area for imparting media literacy, then there must be enough learning opportunities geared to all subjects for fostering broad acquisition of media-related competencies. In this article, the preconditions and requirements for a successful accomplishment of this task will be taken up from the point of view of both Media Pedagogy and Subject Didactics.
This anthology raises the issue on current empirical and theoretical research approaches in the field of didactics, in respect to diversity, gender and new media. The intention is to show the related contemporary use and the reflections on didactic approaches based on the tradition of Allgemeine Didaktik. The brainchild to use English as publication language pursues the idea to make the concept of didactics accessible for the English speaking world. The attempt is to mirror differences of provisions incurrent societal phenomena: new media, gender, and diversity which educational institutions are facing. It will reveal and demonstrate that this is a common issue which is to be addressed for satisfying the demands and necessities in today's schooling out of the national educational perspectives given through the different educational systems. This anthology follows the idea to present approaches with their theoretical or empirical results. Thus, the reader will find a bunch of procedures, suggestions, and methods as well as critical questions shaped by the empirical and theoretical reflective work of the Norwegian, Austrian, US-American, and German authors, who contributed to the book.

; Education plays a crucial role in equipping today's and future citizens with the necessary intellectual tools to critically read or listen to propagandistic messages. Often enough, the persuasive strength of these messages lies more conspicuously in what they convey implicitly than in what they overtly express. The paper presents the first results of a pilot study with students from the University of Krakow involved in a research-based seminar on implicitness in political tweets. Subsequently we describe an experimental project aimed at honing and / or reinforcing high school students' abilities to detect implicit content in a corpus of Twitter messages produced by Italian and Polish politicians. The project, which also focusses on manipulative linguistic strategies in a comparative perspective, intends to sensitize laypeople as well as those engaged in the field of education to the challenges and threats posed by social networking sites (SNS) as they contribute to a massive diffusion of information, thereby forging a tacit consensus based on blindly accepted beliefs and ideologies.
This book explores how the socially disputed period of the Cold War is remembered in today's history classroom. Applying a diverse set of methodological strategies, the authors map the dividing lines in and between memory cultures across the globe, paying special attention to the impact the crisis-driven age of our present has on images of the past. Authors analysing educational media point to ambivalence, vagueness and contradictions in textbook narratives understood to be echoes of societal and academic controversies. Others focus on teachers and the history classroom, showing how unresolved political issues create tensions in history education. They render visible how teachers struggle to handle these challenges by pretending that what they do is 'just history'. The contributions to this book unveil how teachers, backgrounding the political inherent in all memory practices, often nourish the illusion that the history in which they are engaged is all about addressing the past with a reflexive and disciplined approach.
; The goal of media education is quickly named "media competence". If one goes through the history of media education and media didactics, then a lot has already been achieved with this definition of the goal. It is a success of media education as a discipline that a goal accepted by politics, business and schools has crystallised. But is this general acceptance sufficient to define media as an educational task? If one wants to face the educational task theoretically as well as practically, then it is about nothing less than the question of how media intervene in the relationship of people to themselves, to others, to culture, to things and events, perhaps even developing formative power. The relationship of people to themselves, to the social, material and cultural environment was and is always in motion. In this relationship, typical forms of subjectivity emerged and continue to emerge, and socialisation takes place. Subjectivity is always constituted in an unsteady field of subjective inside and objective outside, of individual experience and institutional determination, of given culture and unique appropriation. At the moment, we experience this field as particularly discontinuous. Hence the question of what is currently changing in order to discover the constellation in the media field that is decisive for the constitution of subjectivity, in other words, for education and socialisation. Perhaps this will allow us to accentuate the topics of media education in a new way. Therefore, by way of introduction, a few key words on cultural and social development.
Few countries in the world have introduced media education into their curriculums. Montenegro became one of them in 2009, when "media literacy" was introduced as an optional subject for 16 and 17 year old students of Gymnasium high schools. This article presents the findings of the first and only research conducted so far on media education in Montenegro. It is a national case study which examines the potential of media education to change the school culture and accelerate education system reform towards embracing the new digital education paradigm in the future. The focus is on the results of research conducted through in-depth interviews with media literacy teachers all over the country. Despite the many challenges, all teachers identify the potential of media education to strengthen some of the key competences of the students and to improve their motivation and academic performance. They also identify potential to change positively school culture by transforming teachers into "cultural mediators" (Morcellini, 2007) and by supporting the formation of a "participative culture" (Jenkins & Kelley, 2013) in schools. This research recommends focusing education reform on spreading the media education pedagogy to the entire curriculum in order to embrace the new digital education paradigm in the future. Educational media resources are becoming increasingly popular. This actualizes the issues of identifying their role and significance in the educational process, typology, and classification of resources. The methodological basis of this study is an interdisciplinary approach. Based on a review of the literature, the constituent and functional components of an open digital educational environment are identified. The effects arising in the process of informatization of the educational environment are analyzed. It is proved that a new generation of educational media resources is formed as a result of the evolution of traditional learning management systems and their convergence with the principles of open education. This paper describes applications and online services designed to enrich the intellectual potential of participants in the educational process. The authors' classification of educational media resources is presented in the study. The following characteristics were selected as the defining features for the classification of educational media resources: the technical form of resources, level of user training, user group, type of ownership, type of content, distribution technology, nature of user interaction, specifics. The main functions of an open multimedia educational environment are highlighted, which include compatibility and integration, personalization, analytics, collaboration, accessibility, and universal design. The opportunities for media resources in ensuring the continuity of modern education are revealed. General recommendations on the use of new media in the pedagogical process are given.
(DIPF/Orig.) ; From the perspective of media education, this paper outlines theoretical views on digitalization and, in parallel, discusses thoughts on digitalization in schools in the German-speaking area. From a theoretical point of view, it makes sense to conceptualize digitalization as a phenomenon or a wave of mediatization. Understanding digitalization as a political discourse in the domain of school, it might well be that the enormous current efforts to intr oduce new curricula in schools will not live up to the cultural dynamics and the pace of mediatization. These renewals in media education at school might just be a long overdue upgrade of school. (DIPF/Orig.)
Demokratievermittlung. ; Politics and media, as well as information participation and knowledge about information are closely linked in the daily use of social media platforms. The teaching of media competence and awareness and should therefore be one of the fundamental objectives of political education. A project in practical application allows for a closer look at a specific media didactic concept of democracy education, as well as at its didactics. As part of the political and media didactic workshop "Politics in the Net", conducted by the "Demokratielandschaft Tirol", young people aged 15-18 years dealt with the role of the media in a democracy and, in particular, with the use of social media as an information channel for and about politics. The following outlines a number of the adolescent target group's results and considerations, as well as conclusions drawn in the context of didactics and the teaching of democracy.
